What Is Mercury Retrograde?
From time to time, you will hear people speak about Mercury being “in retrograde”. In simple astronomical terms, Mercury retrograde is an optical illusion. From our vantage point on Earth, the planet Mercury appears to move backwards in the sky for a few weeks. Of course, it is not actually reversing direction; this apparent backward motion is caused by the relative positions and speeds of the Earth and Mercury in their orbits around the Sun.

Despite being an astronomical phenomenon, Mercury retrograde has long been associated in astrology with disruption, confusion and miscommunication. Mercury is traditionally linked with communication, travel, technology, contracts, thought processes and the exchange of information. When it appears to move backwards, many believe these areas of life can become unsettled.
Whether one views this through an astrological lens or simply as a collective psychological expectation, the effects reported during Mercury retrograde are remarkably consistent. Emails go astray. Travel plans are delayed. Technology seems to malfunction at the worst possible moment. Conversations become tangled, misunderstood or emotionally charged.

On a physical level, people often report headaches, disrupted sleep, fatigue, digestive upsets and general tension. Emotionally, there can be heightened anxiety, irritability, overthinking, self-doubt and a sense of being overwhelmed. Old issues may resurface. Past relationships or unresolved conversations can reappear, demanding attention.
Even those who claim not to “believe” in Mercury retrograde frequently notice that during these periods, life feels slightly off balance. Whether the cause is cosmic, psychological, energetic or simply coincidental, the experience for many is real enough. This is precisely where Reiki can offer profound support.

Understanding Reiki as a Stabilising Force
As a Reiki Master teacher, I often describe Reiki as a universal balancing energy. It is not governed by planetary alignments, nor is it disturbed by astrological cycles. Reiki is steady, intelligent and inherently harmonising. It flows where it is needed and restores equilibrium at every level of the human system.
When external circumstances feel chaotic, Reiki brings internal order. When communication feels strained, Reiki clears the energetic pathways that support expression and understanding. When emotions surge or fluctuate, Reiki gently regulates and soothes.

The beauty of Reiki is that it works simultaneously on the physical body, the emotional body and the subtle energy system. During Mercury retrograde, when people often feel scattered or ungrounded, Reiki serves as an anchor.
The Chakra System and Mercury Retrograde
Many of the challenges attributed to Mercury retrograde directly relate to specific chakras.
Communication difficulties and misunderstandings correspond strongly with the throat chakra. When this energy centre is blocked or imbalanced, we may struggle to express ourselves clearly or speak impulsively, and later regret it. During Mercury retrograde, this imbalance can feel amplified.
Overthinking, confusion, and mental agitation are closely related to the third eye chakra. When this centre is unsettled, clarity of thought diminishes. We may question our intuition or become trapped in repetitive mental loops. Anxiety, irritability and emotional turbulence often stem from imbalances in the solar plexus and heart chakras. If these centres are destabilised, confidence wavers and emotional resilience decreases.
Reiki works directly to align and harmonise these chakras. When a Reiki practitioner places their hands on or above the body, universal life force energy flows through the practitioner into the recipient. The chakras begin to rebalance naturally. Excess energy disperses. Deficient energy replenishment. The system returns to coherence.
As the throat chakra clears, communication becomes measured and thoughtful. Words are chosen with care rather than reaction. Listening improves. Misunderstandings diminish.
As the third eye settles, mental clarity returns. Decisions are made with calm discernment rather than impulsive anxiety.
As the solar plexus strengthens, confidence and emotional stability rise. The heart chakra softens and expands, encouraging compassion and patience. In short, Reiki restores the very qualities that Mercury retrograde is often said to disrupt.
Physical and Emotional Healing During Energetic Turbulence
When someone experiences physical symptoms such as headaches, neck and shoulder tension, digestive discomfort, or fatigue during Mercury retrograde, these can often be traced to stress responses. The body reacts to perceived instability by tightening, bracing or overworking.
Reiki induces a deeply restorative parasympathetic response. Heart rate slows. Breathing deepens. Muscles release. The nervous system recalibrates. In this state, the body can repair and rebalance.

Emotionally, Reiki provides a safe, energetic space. It does not suppress feelings, nor does it intensify them. Instead, it allows emotions to surface gently and pass without overwhelming the individual. Many recipients describe a sense of being held, supported and reassured.
This is particularly valuable during periods when old memories or unresolved conversations resurface, as they often do during Mercury retrograde. Reiki helps process these experiences without re-traumatisation. It allows reflection without emotional chaos.
Benefits for Both the Giver and the Receiver - Dual Benefit
One of the most overlooked aspects of Reiki is that it benefits both the practitioner and the recipient simultaneously. When giving Reiki, the practitioner acts as a channel. The energy flows through them before reaching the other person. As a result, the practitioner receives a profound balancing effect as well.
As a Reiki giver, you may find your own communication becomes calmer and more precise. You may notice that you react less and respond more. Your thoughts become ordered. Your emotional tone stabilises.
The person receiving Reiki experiences similar shifts. Conversations between practitioner and recipient often become clearer, kinder and more grounded after a session.
The overall atmosphere surrounding both individuals changes. There is less agitation and more centred awareness. This has a ripple effect into families, workplaces and social circles.
Reiki does not merely counteract confusion. It projects calmness outward. It subtly influences the energetic field around the practitioner and recipient, fostering clear communication and balance.
The Power of Self-Reiki at Every Level
A beautiful truth about Reiki is that once you are attuned, the energy is always available to you. From Level One upwards, practitioners can access this stabilising force at any time.
You do not need an elaborate ceremony or a special planetary alignment. You simply place your hands upon yourself with intention, allow the energy to flow and trust the process.

During Mercury retrograde, daily self-Reiki becomes a powerful anchor. By placing your hands on your head, throat, heart and solar plexus, you directly support the centres most commonly affected. Even a brief session of fifteen or twenty minutes can shift your entire day.
Those trained to Level Two and beyond can also employ distance techniques and symbols to enhance clarity and calm. However, it is important to emphasise that even the simplest hands-on self-treatment is profoundly effective.
Self-Reiki builds resilience. It strengthens the energy field. It creates a steady inner rhythm that is not easily disturbed by external fluctuations.
In my experience, students who commit to daily self-Reiki during challenging astrological periods report fewer misunderstandings, improved sleep, clearer thinking and greater emotional composure. They move through the weeks with steadiness while others feel buffeted by events. This is not a coincidence. It is coherence.
Projecting Calmness and Positive Communication
When you practise Reiki regularly, you begin to embody its qualities. Calmness is no longer something you attempt to manufacture; it becomes your natural state. Clear communication arises from inner balance rather than effort.
During Mercury retrograde, instead of fearing miscommunication, you approach conversations grounded and centred. Instead of expecting delays or disruption, you remain flexible and composed. This shift in mindset alone changes outcomes.
Energy precedes action. When you project calmness, you influence situations before words are even spoken. As Reiki practitioners, we carry a responsibility to be stabilising presences in the world. Rather than attributing challenges solely to planetary motion, we can respond with balance, compassion and clarity.
Mercury retrograde need not be a time of dread. With Reiki, it can become a period of reflection, reorganisation and renewal.
Saying Goodbye to Mercury Retrograde
Ultimately, whether one views Mercury retrograde as an astrological influence or a collective psychological pattern, the key lesson is this: external cycles may fluctuate, but your internal balance is always within reach. Reiki offers that balance.
It aligns the chakras. It calms the nervous system. It clears emotional turbulence. It enhances communication. It strengthens intuition. It supports physical well-being. It benefits both giver and receiver. It empowers practitioners at every level to take responsibility for their own energetic stability.
My advice as a Reiki Master teacher is simple. Practise Reiki daily, whatever your level of experience. Make self-treatment a non-negotiable part of your routine. Offer Reiki to others whenever appropriate. Become a channel of steadiness in uncertain times.
When you do this, Mercury retrograde loses its power over you. Confusion gives way to clarity. Anxiety softens into calm. Miscommunication transforms into understanding.
And with consistent Reiki practice, you can quite literally say goodbye to Mercury retrograde, not by denying its existence, but by rising above its effects through balance, harmony and overwhelming positivity.
